1898 The Post, an enchanting and magical place

I simply love staying in a hotel that is housed in an old historic building and breaths the atmosphere of days gone by. I prefer the words “restored” and “renovated” in press releases announcing new openings rather than “brand new” and “contemporary”.
Just call me “old school” when it comes to staying in hotels.

I mention this with a purpose, last summer a new boutique hotel opened in Ghent.
1898 The Post, near the Graslei and Korenmarkt. The neogotic building dates back to 1898 and was built as the post offices of Ghent, hence the name of the hotel.

1898 The Post is one of Ghent’s finest hotels, not only because of the history of the building itself, but also because of the incredible care given to restoring this piece of Ghent’s architectural history.

Let me take you around Ghent’s latest and most beautiful.

Let me start by saying that the entrance of 1898 The Post is an experience in itself. You are welcomed by a spectacular spiral staircase. Make sure you look up to see the swirly stairs … magical.
You can take the lift up to the lobby of the hotel. The hotel is situated on the first and second floor, but you really have to take the stairs. Not only is it good for your condition, but they are so beautiful and have many windows so you can see the Graslei in its full glory.
The lobby of the hotel breathes the atmosphere of bygone days … wooden floors, antique furniture, lovely decorations on the walls and in the display cabinets.

For our one night stay, a present from my “hubby”, we stayed at “The Letter”, a very beautiful cosy and warm decorated mezzanine room, with high ceiling, big window, dark green walls and an old desk. The room is decorated with accessories you can buy, so you can take a piece of your stay home with you.

The hotel also has a very cosy and gorgeous bar ” The Cobbler”.

The bar, with beautiful views over historic Ghent,  breathes the same nice and pleasing atmosphere as the hotel and is also open for non-residents of the hotel, so it is best that you reserve a place in advance because it can be quite busy. This is also the place where you have your very delicious breakfast when you stay at the hotel. When you don’t want to go to the bar, the hotel also has a very cosy and beautiful “Honesty Bar”. The bar is situated on the second floor in the tower overlooking the Korenmarkt (only for hotel guests).

In short, the historic building of the former post office has truly been given a second chance at a life. It has been restored with such care that you feel as if you are stepping back in time. The staff is positively charming. It is truly an experience not to be missed. This is a hotel I’ll dream of returning to, time and again for a stay.
